Tales from the Alley: Kittens on the Brink by Mr. Whiskers, Feral Extraordinaire

Updated: 1 day ago

Let me tell you something about kittens.

They’re small.

They’re loud.

They’re curious little furballs with eyes too big for their faces and tails that never stop twitching.

And out here on the streets? That kind of innocence doesn’t last long.

But sometimes… sometimes the humans step in.

I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes—from the shadows, of course. A tiny mewl from under a bush, a volunteer with a soft blanket and a whispery voice, a safe trap baited with tuna. It’s not scary—not really. It’s the first step toward something better.

The lucky ones? They don’t grow up like I did, toughing it out in the cold with only moonlight and instincts to guide them. No, these kittens get scooped up by the good folks at Garlic City Kitty Rescue. First stop: warmth, food, and a checkup from the pokey human who smells like disinfectant but saves lives. Then it’s snuggles and naps and all the kibble a kitten could dream of.

But it doesn’t end there.

Some of them—especially the real charmers—get the golden ticket: a trip to Petco in Morgan Hill. It’s like a little kitten palace, complete with soft beds, toys that jingle, and a big window so they can see the world without having to survive it.

That’s where their forever humans find them.

Right now, as I’m writing this from my perch under the fencepost, there are several young cats at Petco just waiting for a family to come take them home. They’re healthy, hopeful, and ready to love like only rescued cats can.

So if you’ve been thinking of adding a little purr to your life, maybe it’s time to meet them.

And if not? Tell a friend.

Because every kitten saved is a life changed—for them and for the human who takes them home.

And trust me, from one scrappy survivor to you:

The world could use more happy endings.

Until next time—

Mr. Whiskers

(Feral, fabulous, and still watching from the shadows)
