Before You Leave Me Behind… A Message from Mr. Whiskers

I’m just a cat. I don’t ask for much—some food, a soft spot to nap, and a little love now and then. But today I need to say something hard.
If you’re thinking about moving, facing health issues, or going through something truly difficult like a domestic violence situation, please, I beg you—don’t leave your cat on the street or dump us in the country.
We’re not built for it.
Especially not the indoor ones like me. We don’t know which plants are poisonous, we’ve never hunted for food, and the coyotes don’t care that we used to sleep curled up on a pillow. Rural areas aren’t some magical cat retirement. They’re full of hunger, cold nights, and silent endings.
So before you give up, do this:
Reach out to local rescues. Be honest. We know they’re overwhelmed, but offering a donation or to cover medical care can sometimes help open a door.
Plan ahead. If you know something’s changing, give the rescue time. Finding a foster takes effort—it’s not instant, but it can happen.
Call your shelter. Even if they don’t usually take owner surrenders, talking to someone might help you understand your options.
Don’t ghost us. We’ve given you our trust. Don’t repay that with silence.
And if you’re scared or unsure, know this: You’re not alone. There are good humans out there who want to help—sometimes they just need a little time.
Please don’t let our last moments be alone and afraid.
With all the whiskers and love,
Mr. Whiskers
A street-smart survivor (but just barely)
